Step 3: Location, through floor
Position the stair, choose opening shape
Place the stair on your plan. It can be located in an open area of the floor, against a wall, or in a corner. Rotate the stair to position the top and bottom treads to provide easy access. Use the other direction-of-turn cutout diagram for different tread placement. Try a different diameter spiral staircase for more possibilities.
Decide what shape you want the upper floor opening and safety handrail to be — circular, rectangular, or something else.
The examples shown here are only a few of the many different locations and openings that are possible. Explore the possibilities with your contractor, who knows the details of your home and local building codes, and will be responsible for the installation.
